Setting the Tone

While this isn't the first time I'm posting entries online, this definitely is the first time I'm creating a themed blog.

初めてのブログではないけど、「沖縄」をテーマにするブログは初となります。

Before I begin sharing my thoughts on life here in Okinawa, here's a taste for the first few readers:

迷子の羊は、皆さんに沖縄の生活についてお話したいと思いますが、まずとっても気に入っている喫茶店を紹介しておきましょう。


浜辺の茶屋 (hamabe no chaya, Cafe by the Beach)




This gem of a cafe is well-known among locals and extremely popular with tourists from mainland Japan. The quaint little establishment sits along the beach in Nan-jo City just 30 minutes south of Naha, the prefectural capital.

「浜辺の茶屋」は、地元の人々によく知られ、県外からのお客さんの間でも評判が非常にいいです。お店は南部の南城市にあって、那覇から車で約30分です。


On lazy afternoons in summer, nothing beats sitting by the counter facing the shoreline and taking in the salty breeze, drink in hand (and perhaps a treasured companion or two by your side). At low tide, the shallow waters part to reveal a natural playground; crabs scuttle along reefs while small fish can also be spotted extremely easily. Quite something for city dwellers like us I suppose.

夏ののんびりした午後に、浜辺を眺めながら、さわやかな風に吹かれるのは、何よりもいいですね。引き潮のときに、カニや魚がよく見えるので、海も十分楽しめます。都会育ちのシンガポール人にとって、かなり面白い体験ですね。


The cafe offers simple fare like sandwiches and cakes, so it makes for a perfect stopover for a light afternoon tea. Do try the cheesecake and their selection of drinks served in handcrafted ceramic cups.

お店ではサンドやケーキがメインなので、ちょっとお腹がすいたときにちょうどいいです。レアチーズケーキと浜辺の茶屋の特製のコップに入っているコーヒーを召し上がってみてください。


The restaurant is open everyday from 10am to 8pm, although on Mondays it operates only from 2pm to 8pm. On every first Sunday in the month of April, the cafe organizes a live event that sees jam sessions featuring local singers and bands taking place on a stage built over the water surface.

浜辺の茶屋は、毎日午前10時から午後8時まで営業しますが、月曜日は午後の2時からスタートです。毎年4月の最初の日曜日に、「海楽」というライブ・イベントを開催するので、興味のある方はぜひ行ってみてくださいね。
